Program Specialist – ‘Imi Na’auao Program

 

Job Description

ʻOhana Waʻa (ʻOW) is seeking a dedicated Program Specialist to support the implementation of the ʻImi Naʻauao program, a 5-year initiative focused on addressing climate change in relation to voyaging throughout Moananuiakea and its effects on our land base, nearshore waters, waʻa kaulua, and voyaging communities.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning and execution of annual ʻImi Naʻauao events across partner organizations and islands

  • Coordinate and support quarterly activities focused on continuing initiatives from ʻImi Naʻauao events

  • Liaise with partner organizations, contractors, and community members to facilitate program activities

  • Support federal grant reporting and monitoring through authorized access to federal reporting systems

  • Coordinate with the contracted HR firm as needed regarding employee matters

  • Assist in the development and implementation of learning modules and workshops on topics such as:

    •  Marine ecosystem monitoring and 3D reef modeling

    • Native forest restoration and adaptation

    • Food security and traditional provisioning practices

    • Waʻa maintenance and adaptation to climate change

  • Support data collection, analysis, and reporting for program evaluation

  • Assist in the maintenance and updating of the ʻOhana Waʻa website and online learning resources

  • Coordinate logistics for expert visits, field trips, and training sessions

  • Support the Project Manager in budget tracking and resource management

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Hawaiian studies, marine biology, or related field

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in program coordination or community outreach

  • Strong understanding of Hawaiian culture, voyaging traditions, and environmental issues

  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

  • Proficiency in data collection and basic analysis techniques

  • Experience with content management systems and social media platforms

  • Ability to travel inter-island as needed

 

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in cultural or environmental sectors

  • Fluency in Hawaiian language

  • Background in climate change adaptation or environmental conservation

  • Experience with educational program development

  • Knowledge of traditional Hawaiian environmental management practices

  • Familiarity with waʻa kaulua maintenance and voyaging practices

ʻOhana Waʻa (ʻOW) is seeking a dedicated Project Manager to oversee the ʻImi Naʻauao program, a 5-year initiative focused on addressing climate change in relation to voyaging throughout Moananuiakea and its effects on our land base, nearshore waters, waʻa kaulua, and voyaging communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the ʻImi Naʻauao program across all partner organizations and islands

  • Manage and coordinate with partner organizations and contractors to ensure project goals and timelines are met, including:

    • Coordinating with ʻOW's contracted accountant for contractor payments

    • Overseeing financial management and reporting of federal funds

    • Working within federal online monitoring and reporting systems

    • Maintaining proper documentation for federal grant compliance

  • Manage the project budget and resources, ensuring efficient allocation and use

  • Coordinate with the contracted HR firm regarding employee matters until an organizational administrator is established

  • Develop and maintain project schedules, including the annual ʻImi Naʻauao events and quarterly activities

  • Liaise with experts, kupuna, and community leaders to facilitate knowledge sharing and program development

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of the ʻOhana Waʻa website and online learning modules

  • Ensure proper documentation and reporting of project activities, outcomes, and evaluations

  • Adapt project plans as needed to address changing environmental conditions and community needs

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Hawaiian studies, marine biology, or related field

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in program coordination or community outreach

  • Strong understanding of Hawaiian culture, voyaging traditions, and environmental issues

  • Strong understanding of Hawaiian culture, voyaging traditions, and environmental issues

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders

  • Proven ability to manage complex, multi-year projects with multiple partners and locations

  • Experience with budget management and resource allocation

  • Proficiency in project management software and tools

  • Ability to travel inter-island as needed

  • Fluency in Hawaiian language preferred
